With America’s high obesity rate most everyone is looking for ways to avoid calories and keep off the pounds. But as a college student it’s harder to focus on your health and weight when you’ve got so many other things to worry about, like school and work. This causes what students call the “Freshman 15”. When you have hundreds of assignments to do and tons of other responsibilities you’re not always thinking about eating healthy and getting gym time, you eat whatever you can get your hands on and instead of gym time you prefer nap time. But there are simple things you can do to avoid gaining that freshman 15 and stay healthy.
I know that Starbucks drinks are like magically delicious elixir but many of their drinks are very unhealthy. And don’t worry you don’t have to give it up. Starbucks gives you the “skinny” and non-fat options. So opt for getting no sugar and cream and choose skim milk instead of whole. And yes, no whip cream and caramel drizzle, think of the love-handles.
It’s hard to find time to go to the gym. Working out may not be your first priority at the moment, with having so much work on your hands, but there are simple things you can do that will help you stay in shape. Many may complain about the hills and valleys you need to hike to get to classes but think of the benefits! Those Car Park stairs may seem like hell but it’s a great way to get some daily exercise. Instead of taking the shortcut try and take the long way to class. Park slightly further so you can do some walking and try to take the long way to class, you may enjoy an even nicer landscape!
And lastly, watch what you eat. Obvious of course but it can be difficult with all the fatty options you have on campus. So here’s what you do. Avoid vending machines. Yes, most everything in a vending machine is not natural and healthy, it’ll most likely be filled with sugar and false preservatives. If your stomach is growling and it simply cannot be avoided, make the healthier decision and go for the fruit gummies or nuts. When eating around campus try to avoid fried and greasy foods. It may seem impossible but you have lots of other options, go for the salad, sushi, whole wheat sub, fruit salad, or even the taco salad!
These tips won’t guarantee you a six pack but they’re easy things you can do that won’t effect your schedule or add to your work load. Stay fit and stay healthy!
