Coheed and Cambria Unleash Silent Earth

Rockers mix acoustic and electric delights at the Wellmont

Coheed and Cambria played at the Wellmont Theater on September 25th for their Neverender: Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth 3 and I had VIP passes to see the show. Those with VIP passes got in early and were able to see Coheed perform an acoustic version of Jimmy Eat World’s A Praise Chorus. This is a change up for a traditionally metal band to play an acoustic set however they did it justice.

After the acoustic set. Thank You, Scientist took the stage and opened for Coheed and Cambria. Thank You, Scientist is a seven piece experimental metal band featuring guitar, bass, drums, violin, saxophone, trumpet as well as vocals. Five of the seven members of Thank You, Scientist graduated from the Montclair State Music Education program. Thank You, Scientist toured with Coheed and Cambria the entire length of the tour including the band’s stint at the Wellmont. It was really great to see Montclair State alumni on stage opening for a powerhouse band like Coheed and Cambria. They played a short set but they played songs like Feed the Horses, Carnival, Blue Automatic, In the Company of Worms and My Famed Disappearing Act. Their experimental and rare style mixed so well with Coheed and Cambria’s already stand-out sound.

Coheed and Cambria came on soon after and played the full Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth 3 Album including hits from the album like A Favor House Atlantic and Blood Red Summer. From the moment the telephone rang in The Ring in Return the packed crowd went crazy. The audience that night was made up mostly of devoted fans that have followed Coheed and Cambria from the beginning. With captivating set pieces and lighting cues the audience was enamored with the show. After the full album was played Coheed and Cambria came out and played their highlights from previous records, including Number City where members of Thank You, Scientist played with them. Coheed and Cambria played a second and third encore. These sets featured songs from their first Neverender Tour The Second Stage Turbine Blade including the song Neverender as well as songs from Good Apollo I’m Burning Star IV and The Aftermath: Descension.

The last encore song played was their mega-hit Welcome Home off of the album Good Apollo. The energy in the crowd was absolutely electric. You could tell the band could just feel the audience’s’ enthusiasm and it just made their performance that much better. While I personally am disappointed they did not play certain songs such as The Suffering and The Devil In Jersey City, I was thoroughly pleased with the concert and the experience I had that night.
