CARPE DIEM: NJ Spotlight’s John Mooney

On this episode of Carpe Diem, host Merrill Brown, director of the School of Communication and Media at Montclair State University is joined by John Mooney, founding editor and education writer for NJ Spotlight. Mooney shares current insights about NJ Spotlight, education, and investigative reporting.

Launched in 2009, NJ Spotlight covers New Jersey public policy and among its accomplishments in 2011, it won the Online Journalism Award for General Excellence from the Online News Association, and it has been recognized as one of the top online news sites by the NJ Society of Professional Journalists.

Prior to the NJ Spotlight launch, for over 15 years Mooney worked as an education reporter for The Newark Star-Ledger and The Bergen Record, as well as a contributing writer for The New York Times. His work has been recognized with various awards, including honors from the Education Writers Association and the American Society of News Editors. Mooney has spoken about New Jersey’s education policies and the role of education journalism at numerous conferences and events.
